Summer Camp

From Mr. Rector

As Mr. Deuger mentioned in his email about summer camp, we will have a high adventure option the week of July 5-11 at Camp Pipsico for adults and Scouts (14 and older for PEX, 13 and older for SCUBA). I have included the link for the camp’s high adventure programs. They are offering PEX (Pipsico Experience) and SCUBA, but, unfortunately, Sail Hampton Roads is not offered the week we are going. The cost of PEX is $475 for youth and $400 for adults. SCUBA is $645 for both youth and adults. There is a $20 discount for both programs if paid in full by 4/1/20. Base camp is available for leaders that are not interested in PEX or SCUBA and the fee is $140. Availability is limited for PEX (12 spots for youth, 2 for adults) and SCUBA (10 spots for youth, 2 for adults), so I would like to reserve spots as soon as possible. If you are interested in joining us for high adventure at Pipsico this summer, please let me know and I will start the reservation process.

Summer Camp

From Mr. Deuger:

Now that the new years has passed and the cold winter wind blows we all look to the warmer days of summer and our best outing of the year, summer camp. Troop 511 has two different excursions to choose from this year. Mr. Rector is planning a high adventure trip to Pipsico in Virginia the week of July 5 to 11, he will be advising the troop on that trip soon. This year the troop is going to Camp Ho Non Wah for our regular summer camp the week of June 28 to July 4. Camp Ho Non Wah is outside Charleston SC on the Atlantic coast. Camp Ho Non Wah offers the Woodsman program for 1st year scouts, regular merit badge program and Bohicket Towne where you live like the settlers did in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. More information will be coming out about these programs soon. We are working on opening up the registration on our troop website and will have that going soon too. We want to get the early bird cost for camp so we are targeting to have all fees payed to the camp by May 1st. For the merit badge program the fee is $300, Woodsman program fee is $330 and Bohicket Towne cost is $370. In order to make the May 1st deadline all fees are due to the troop by April14th. Additional troop fees will apply for travel and lunch on the day we travel to camp, amount has yet to be determined. The fee for adults this year is $150 and I am hoping for the usual 8 leaders to accompany the scouts. Any questions or concerns, let me know. More information will be flooding out as the days go by.

Upcoming Hiking

Hello everyone!
We are having a few Troop hikes this winter (dates below).    Great prep for the 14 mile backpacking trip in March or just because you enjoy hiking.   Please come join us for some fresh air and exercise.

Important information:

1.  Come prepared with your 10 essentials in your day pack.  Wear weather appropriate clothing and bring plenty of water.

2. Be on time and have a great attitude.    Scouts, no RSVP is required but be on time.   Parents, if your Scout arrives late you may NOT drop off your scout and tell him to catch up with us.   You must hike with your Scout until you catch up with the group or choose to join us another day.

3.  Return times are approximate and will depend on the pace of the group.  If you are on a tight time schedule please join us for a different hike.
4.  You must sign your Scout in and give us a emergency contact number.  Do NOT drop your Scout off and leave.
5.  If a non Troop 511 Scout (such as a sibling) wants to hike with us the parents must hike with us also.  6.  Friendly dogs on leash are welcome.

Rifle / Shotgun Merit Badge

Our Troop has been giving a fabulous opportunity to earn the Rifle and/or Shotgun Merit Badge with The Sir Walter Gun Club in Creedmoor.   1:1 instruction.    They do this monthly with different Troops so they are very knowledgeable about Scouts.

If you are interested read carefully there is a lot of information.

The maximum number of scouts they allow is 20 and it will be first come first serve. I will start taking sign ups Monday night 8/12 at 6:00pm in the order I receive the emails. If space is still available you can also sign up with me in person at the Troop meeting. This gives everyone time to look at their calendars and have conversations with parents.

You MUST attend both days of their training.

Classroom training: Saturday October 5th 8:00- noon

Range Time: Saturday October 26th 8:00 am-4:00 pm

Cost:
Ammunition for both Rifle and Shotgun is free to the scouts thanks to the NRA Grant.

Rifle – free
Shotgun- ammo is free but the cost is around $8 to cover their cost of clay targets. This will be charged to their scout accounts.

You will need to drive your scout or arrange to carpool.

The following is from Sir Walter Gun Club:
“Scouts MAY NOT bring ANY firearms with them.”

“Scouts must shoot our rifles and shotguns. They are all youth model guns that will fit them. The shotguns are 20 ga. semi auto’s with reduced recoil and perfect for scout use.”

“Scouts are welcome to try for one or both merit badges. We have not had a scout fail to qualify for the rifle badge in years. One on one instruction works wonders and my instructors are very dedicated to seeing their student succeed. (We sometimes swap out instructors to achieve the right chemistry between instructor and student and the instructors initiate this when needed)
I hope every scouts that does not have the rifle merit badge will try for it.”

“The shotgun badge is a bit harder to achieve. Shotgun shooting is not for everyone but again I encourage them to try.”

“Three things are needed for the scout to receive the blue card: (Everyone who passes all three will leave Saturday afternoon
with a blue card(s).

  1. Attend the classroom activity.
  2. Complete the homework assignment that will be provided about a month before the classroom activity.
  3. Successfully shoot the requirement specified by each merit badge.

The homework assignment is the first section of the merit badge book and is designed to get the scout to open the book and read it.

If a parent has a question you cannot answer feel free to
share my contact info with them so they can ask me directly. “

Popcorn!!!

Good evening Scouts and Families,

It’s that time of year again. We are starting to prepare for Popcorn Season and cannot wait to share all the great information for this years selling with you.

We will be having our Popcorn Kick Off meeting Tuesday September 17th so please make sure your scout attends and parents are welcome too.

Until then, there are three things you and/or your scout can start thinking about.

  1. Get your scout to log into and download the Trails-End app. This app will let them track their orders, send emails out, take credit cards and also sign up for selling booths.
  2. A form was set out through troopnews email. If your scout wants to have popcorn in hand for opening weekend of popcorn sales, please fill out the form and hand it in this week or at next weeks meeting. Please note the day and time for popcorn pick up. Friday, September 20th from 2pm-5pm is the only time available for scouts to pick up popcorn before selling starts on September 21st.
  3. I am looking for two parents to help volunteer their time to assist during popcorn season. This would include finalizing selling booths, help with distribution of orders, help with set up and break down of selling booths and collecting final orders/payments. If interested, please email me directly.

More information will be shared and distributed at the September 17th meeting. Looking forward to an AWESOME Popcorn Year!!!
